Decorating Our New Build: Our Backyard Covered Patio
Come summer, I can’t wait to spend ALL the time outdoors that I possibly can. I’ve always dreamed of having a big covered patio area, and today I’m sharing how I’ve decorated the backyard covered patio in our new build home so we can enjoy it all season long.
It’s the last week of school around here and we’ve been hit by a heat wave! It’s a great way to kick off the official start to summer, and we’re excited to be spending as much time as possible outside over the coming weeks. One of my favourite features in our new build house is the spacious covered patio area directly off the great room. I’ve been working hard to turn it into a charming, calm, and inviting outdoor space; kind of like our own little outdoor oasis to enjoy on warm summer mornings and leisurely evenings. Today I’m sharing the progress I’ve made so far on decorating our backyard covered patio using a mix of previously owned pieces and new fun outdoor finds.
This week I’ve joined some of my blogging friends who are also sharing their beautifully decorated outdoor spaces with you. Be sure to check out the bottom of today’s post to see all the inspiration, I know you will find some ideas that appeal to you!
Our backyard is far from finished, although we do have grass! The fence is underway and as you might notice our backyard covered patio is still currently open to the neighbours until we get the fence built. The posts are in and now it’s a matter of finding a chunk of time where my husband and our neighbour can work together to get it built. My husband has been working out of town a ton this past month, so the fence got put on hold for the moment. Once it’s finished, I can’t wait to add some landscaping to the edges of the yard and along the back, as well. If you follow along on my Instagram stories, you may have seen that I was landscaping the front yard this past weekend as a surprise for my husband for Father’s Day – I’ll be sharing the details on our front yard and front porch entry really soon!
Backyard Patio
Although our backyard itself is unfinished, we are still enjoying sitting outdoors in the new little intimate gathering area that I’ve setup on the backyard covered patio. The forest in the background is another of our favourite features about this property, and it creates a relaxing feel in our yard. I’m planning to design our backyard garden to be an enhancement to the natural zen kind of feel that the forest backdrop provides.
Originally I had wanted to purchase a new set of patio furniture for our back patio and use our current set at our lake property, but we decided to hold off for the moment and use what we have for this season. We had previously purchased the outdoor sofa and two matching chairs for our Forest house deck, but most of the other pieces are new this season, as we sold a lot of our outdoor furniture and decor touches with our cabin. I really love the big wheel light fixture that I chose for this space – you can find it here. I’m also glad that we splurged on cedar soffits for this covered patio area as they add so much warmth, character, and create a distinctive feel to our new outdoor room. Our builder’s crew from Joel Salmon Contracting did a beautiful job with all of the natural wood finishings in this area.
To create a cozy, intimate, and appealing outdoor room I knew that I wanted a new fire pit table, and since we didn’t end up ordering any new main furniture we decided we could splurge on that new, major item. I think it totally transforms this whole patio space into a distinctive and welcoming outdoor room.
This is the Olivet Fire Pit Table, with a matching tank holder included, and I’m really pleased with it so far! It gives great heat and ambiance and is super solid and pretty!
In the past I’ve often decorated with a mix of colours in my outdoor throw pillows and accessories, but for this covered backyard patio I decided to keep things pretty neutral and zen by using just greys, dark blues, and white/cream/natural tones. I am loving this scheme and think it will work all year around. Having this patio covered means that we can enjoy it out here at least three seasons of the year!
I ordered this light and neutral 8×10 outdoor area rug to ground the seating area, and then the hunt began for a couple of additional chairs to add to finish off the seating group. These two chairs are from HomeSense, but I’ve gathered some similar finds for you below.
As I mentioned, most of our outdoor pillows were sold with the cabin, so I was starting with a pretty blank slate. The pillows, lanterns, throws, and decorative pots are all from either HomeSense or Winners, and my sister-in-law helped me with much of the shopping for this space since both my husband and I have been working so much and couldn’t get out of town very much this spring. I’ve also gathered some similar pillow and decor finds for you at the bottom of this post.
We are super happy with our backyard covered patio and how a few simple pieces can turn it into a true outdoor oasis for us to relax and enjoy our time in. The perfect spot to take a break from all those finishing the house and yard jobs that we’ve been tackling lately!
