Deck Decor on our Summer Patio

Deck decor ideas and our summer outdoor decor on the back patio.

There is finally some sunshine and warmth in the weather forecast around here, and school lets out on Thursday. After the chilliest, rainiest spring that I ever remember experiencing, everyone is craving a hint of summer! With the cooler days, we haven’t been inspired to use our outdoor space very often yet this year, but I’m hoping that is about to change. Today I’m sharing our back patio all ready for summer and some simple deck decor ideas to help you create a welcoming space to enjoy during the summer season.

Today I’m being joined by some friends who are also sharing their summer outdoor decor ideas, summer deck decor ideas, landscaping tips, and patio decor sources. Make sure to check out what they are sharing by visiting their articles!

Friends joining me today are: Sarah from Grace in My Space, Jen from tatertots and jello, Laura from Willow Street Interiors, Melaine from My Sweet Savannah, Kelly from The Tattered Pew, and Laura from Inspiration for Moms.

How to decorate your patio or deck for summer:

Create a focal point. We added this propane fire pit, which creates a comfortable and cozy focal point to layout a seating area around.

Include a source of heat

The fire pit also doubles as a heat source, which makes it more enjoyable to enjoy time outdoors during cooler days and evenings. It also helps extend the season of our deck patio area.

Use comfy furniture

We invested in a set of good quality patio furniture a few years back and it has held up very well. If your area isn’t under cover, you will want to cover it or bring the cushions in for the winter months in most areas. Adding comfy pillows and throws also helps create a comfortable feeling in your outdoor seating area.

Make it feel cozy  large areas smaller

By situating our furniture around a fire pit and grounding it all with a rug, we made our good-sized patio area feel cozier. It could easily feel a bit stark with the high vaulted ceiling, but the furniture grouping we used is comfortable and close together.

Add pops of colour

I love pops of colour outdoors, and you can go much brighter than you might indoors, as colour appears much less saturated out in the natural light. This year I added a pop of terracotta/coral tone to my dark blue patio cushions from last season.

Lots of plants!

I think it’s truly the greenery that makes a deck decor stand out; and it’s also probably the easiest one to add. I love to do a lot of foliage plants – especially ferns! They add so much warmth and texture to a space. I’ve added in a few pots of flowers as well, but we won’t really get to enjoy them as much until later in the season, whereas the ferns five us that sense of cozy the whole season long.

I hope you enjoyed my tips for creating a cozy and welcoming patio with these simple deck decor ideas. Be sure to read this article about creating an outdoor room for more ideas.

  3. Krista, I love your use of ferns and plants all surrounding your outdoor living space. The greenery makes all the outdoor furniture feel integrated into the outdoors. I absolutely love how you’ve styled this space! Thank you for the great tips!

  4. This patio is so welcoming and inviting. It says, “sit down, have an iced tea and relax”. We live in south Florida where we will see daytime highs in the mid to upper 90’s until October. The evenings never go below 80. But our winters are lovely, cooler and sometimes with a breeze, that’s when we use our patio. I’m going to take these creative ideas and pull them out in the fall when I get our patio ready for entertaining. Thanks for your generosity in sharing all your creative ideas.

  5. Krista I have enjoyed seeing your space come together. You have created such a welcoming and cozy outdoor space. I love all of the plants you have added and you have such great seating! Thanks for hosting and happy summer!

  6. Your weather sounds like mine. In the PNW, we are finally getting some summer weather. I still haven put my patio together yet. Your outdoor spaces look lovely.
