Lake House Summer Home Tour: Waterside Home Tours

Lake House Summer Tour at the happy housie

There is just something about being near water.

It seems to have some sort of universal draw for people.

So many of our dream homes and vacation homes and vacation destinations all center around a body of water.

Whether it’s an ocean, lake, river, or stream; sources of water seem to have the power to relax, rejuvenate, and refresh.

So I guess it makes sense that coastal inspired decor has such a huge following.

And what I love about it is that it can be interpreted in so many different ways.

From the bright colourful cottages of Tybee Island to the lush luxury of Hamptons inspired decor. From the cheerful shores of Key West, to the upscale modern Malibu beach house look. From the kitschy cute chic of the Hawaiian Islands, to the rustic lodge feel of a lake retreat; all kinds of decor styles incorporate a coastal feel.

And this week I’m part of a fun home tour series with 15 other bloggers whose decorating and style is inspired by living on or near the water. I can’t wait to tour all their homes and see the way that they have interpreted waterside design.

And today I’m sharing our take on coastal design through the first part of our lake house summer home tour.

A tour of 16 GORGEOUS homes inspired by nearby waters!!! www.tableandhearth.com

If this is your first time here, then welcome! I’m so excited to be sharing a little piece of our home with you today. Head over here to learn more if you are new!

We live on beautiful Sproat Lake which is a fairly large lake with four main arms located in the middle of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Our lake is about 10-15 minutes outside of a small town {population approx. 30K including the outlying areas}, and that is where we work, shop, play sports etc. But the lake is our favourite spot to be, whenever we can manage to be home, especially come summertime. Our boys started swimming in the lake early this year: we had a heat spell in April that inspired them to swim; but it’s not uncommon for the lake to be easily swimmable from early May through later September. We love spending time on our deck, on our dock, out kayaking, and boating as well as swimming our way through the summer. And the boys love tubing and are starting to learn to waterski as well. Who knows, there may even be a little bit of wake boarding in their future this summer…

Now let’s get this tour rolling… come on in!

Welcome to our entry hall. My DIY Pottery Barn Knockoff Faux Succulent wreath found a home on our front door for the summer and adds a beachy hit of green to our entrance.

I’ve made a few changes to this space over the past few months – mainly adding the faux map wallpaper as well as switching up the furniture. This smaller chalk painted entry table fits the small scale of the room much better then our old long table did.

To give our entry a summery feel I kept things fairly simple and actually removed one of the chairs that we had in here previously. I just added some fresh flowers and a few beachy accessories along with the chalkboard art to give this space a fresh, summery touch.

From the Entry Hall we can head into the open living room and dining room space. Today we are going to focus on the dining room: I will be sharing a tour of the living room on Friday. The waterski was a garage sale find the summer after we moved in.

With the recent living room makeover {as part of the One Room Challenge this past Spring}, the DIY Lakeshore Cottages sign I made found a new home on our large peaked wall (where the waterski used to live).

Our dining room is one of our favourite spaces…especially since we added this new beautiful table that my Dad built for us. The legs for the table were ordered from Osborne Wood Products; and I plan to share our plans and some tips for building your own farmhouse table on the blog really soon.

To give the dining room a summery feel I just added some of my favourite summer flowers, a few new cushions on the pew, and decorated our side table with some beachy accessories and printables.

I love the summery vibe of the new side table vignette. Lots of driftwood {I will be sharing the details on that driftwood tree tomorrow}, some tropical greenery, and some cute printables that I made {I will also be sharing these later in the week}.

And the rest of the dining room…

In addition to building the farmhouse table, we installed the board and batten ourselves and painted the walls in Whispering Spring {Benjamin Moore}. The paintings are all thrift store finds that I updated {I shared the details here}. The pew was a gift from some good friends, the light fixture was ordered from Joss & Main, and the curtains are a super fast and easy DIY that you can make even if you don’t sew. The large blue jugs (demi-johns) are from Jysk, the rug is Ikea, the wooden chairs are from Urban Barn, and the end chairs are from HomeSense. I made the table runner with some gorgeous Shibori Indigo fabric from Tonic Living.

From the dining room, you get a little glimpse of our recently made-over living room. I’ll be sharing a tour of that and our white & blue coastal kitchen on Friday.

Now let’s head out to the deck

The best place to be in the summer.

Except in the middle of a hot, hot day.

Then it’s way too hot out there {hence the umbrella}.

But on hot, hot days you want to be down on the dock anyhow. That’s swimming time…

My easy DIY kitchen herb garden in deck pots is thriving except for my basil. All my basil has died. Maybe it did not like the pot? Or the sun exposure? I’m not sure. I guess I will try something else in there…

We are loving our DIY rolling stump side table, and the varathane has worked amazingly well! It has stood up perfectly to the many rain storms we’ve had lately.

And even though our deck is super hot during the middle of the day, the sun tucks behind the trees from about 4:30pm on, so it is nice and shady every evening. The perfect spot to enjoy an al fresco meal!

The part we love?

The view.

Later in the summer our deck is getting a big makeover. We are expanding it a little. Adding some stairs down to the lower lawn. And getting new railings.

Woot woot!

I can’t wait to have glass railings out here. It is going to make a beautiful spot to relax just that much more beautiful.

    1. Hi Kay – that colour is Aegean Teal which is the top or near the top on the same chip of paint from Benjamin Moore.

  1. So happy to have discovered your lovely blog. We had a summer home on a lake in Maine and your photos bring back lots of memories. Love your decorating style…I have a 4 x 8 foot antique pine table that is very similar to yours. BTW, I pinned your wreath…it is so pretty and is now on my project list.

    1. Hi Karen! Thanks for your sweet comment!! Our table is a DIY that we built and hope it looks antique- I would have loved to have found a real antique, but living on the west coast we have fewer beautiful early Canadiana style antiques around then are available on the East Coast. Thank you for your visit and pin!!
