Wall Mural Wallpaper in our Dining Room

How we added some serious drama to our dining room décor by installing a DIY wall mural wallpaper landscape design feature wall.

A Big Change in the Dining Room!

This past fall, I finally took the leap and made some dramatic decorative changes in our dining room space. Having installed two wall mural wallpaper feature in the past, I thought that mural wallpaper was exactly the dose of energy and drama that this room needed to bring it back to life. You can see those wallpaper murals here and here. I ordered a painted abstract landscape design through Photowall. It turned out to be exactly what this drab dining space needed to come back to life. I couldn’t be happier that I took the plunge!

Decorating our New Build over time:

If you’ve been following along during the last couple of years you know that we had our current house built for us by a local builder. We’ve been living here for just about two years. Costs began to skyrocket while we built through the first part of COVID. As such, we decided to cut back where we could and did quite a bit of finishing work ourselves. Painting was one area that we felt capable of DIYing, so we set about painting nearly all the walls in our 2500 square foot new build. To keep things simple, and because we wanted to move in ASAP, we painted most of it white (Chantilly Lace to be exact). We figured we could work our way through the rooms, decorating and updating the paint as we felt moved to.

The white painted walls felt dreary and lifeless…

For some areas of our house, the white walls worked well. But there are some darker spots in our home that felt all wrong in the crisp true white that is Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace. The dining room was one of those areas. No matter what time of day, or how much natural sunlight was coming through our back doors and windows, it always felt dark and shadowy in the dining room. An otherwise beautiful, crisp white paint colour felt dull and lifeless in here. Every time I looked over into our dining area from the kitchen, I felt an inward cringe. I just hated it!

Here is how it looked before this DIY wall mural wallpaper feature wall. I’ve made a few other changes as well (with the vintage hutch I painted). We also reoriented the table and I like it much better the new way.

My third wallpaper wall mural DIY install!

As I mentioned, this is the third time I’ve installed wallpaper wall murals from Photowall. After experience with them, I truly do recommend their products. I prefer to order the premium quality and apply the glue directly to the wall to install it. I shared my DIY tips for installing a wallpaper mural in this article last Spring:

Transforming the dining room with mural wallpaper:

It’s always such a fun transformation to observe! Seeing it go up is a pretty dramatic experience, and it’s exciting to step back at the end and take it all in for the first time as a whole.

Quite the difference, right?

And doesn’t this space look 1000x better than it did before I added this dramatic mural wallcovering? I honestly couldn’t be happier. I feel that it truly sets the stage for the colour scheme I wanted to carry throughout our dining/living/kitchen great room area.

We’ve also made a few changes and updates to our living room this winter.  I’ll be back to share them with you soon! Can you spot anything different in this pic?

Would you ever try a wall mural in your home? Photowall is a great site to check out for inspiration if you have a blah wall somewhere that you want to add some drama to!

  1. The colors in the mural are amazing – they make the room pop. I also think that at least the mirror and the orangey based lamp detract from the beauty of the mural. Love your china cabinet.

  2. Hi, love the mural wall. I also agree about leaving the wall as a focal point. My eye Was drawn more to the accessories in Front of the wall, leaving the wall more as a backdrop. The wallpaper is beautiful.

  3. Love the mural wall, but I think it needs to be the highlight feature in the room. My opinion is the pieces in front of it– mirror, table & accessories and plant detract from it’s beauty. Just a thought.
