Worms & Dirt Halloween Cupcakes with Printable Gravestone Markers

Today I’m sharing a simple yummy Worms and Dirt Halloween cupcake recipe with free printable gravestone markers.

We’re already a week into October and Halloween will be here before we know it. While I’m not sure whether we will be doing any trick-or-treating this year I know that my boys won’t want to just skip past the day altogether. They’ll definitely want to do something fun to mark the occasion, and these easy and delicious “worms and dirt” Halloween cupcakes fit the bill perfectly for a fun Halloween recipe and treat.

Cupcakes with worms and dirt.

If you aren’t familiar with “worms and dirt” it’s basically delicious chocolate pudding topped with chocolate cookie crumbs and piled with gummy worms.  As one of the special desserts at my boys’ favourite family restaurant, they love this delicious concoction of chocolatey gooey goodness.

Candy worms and chocolate cupcakes in a graveyard.

These worms and dirt cupcakes are extra cute for Halloween because I baked them using a mini-loaf pan to make them look like graves piled high with fresh dirt oozing with gummy worms.  I baked them in liners but removed them after the Halloween cupcakes had cooled as the brown cupcakes look more authentically like a grave for Halloween than the white liners did.  If you could find brown or black mini-loaf pan liners you might be able to keep them on and still get the same fun Halloween look.

The free printable gravestone markers are available in my printable library – see below for instructions on how to access them for yourself.

This fun Halloween recipe is easy to make as I used a store bought boxed cake mix, boxed pudding mix, pre-crushed Oreo cookie crumbs, and candy gummy worms.  As I mentioned I baked the cupcakes in a mini-loaf pan like this one…

The baking time ended up being right in the middle of the range listed on the box for regular cupcakes.  Once they’d cooled, I spooned the pudding on top and then sprinkled on the Oreo cookie crumbs. I printed off and cut out the gravestone markers and then simply taped toothpicks to the back of them and pushed them into the ends of the “grave” cupcakes.

Worms & Dirt Halloween Cupcakes

A fun Halloween Treat idea, these worms & dirt Halloween cupcakes are quick and easy to make using boxed cake mix and jello pudding mix.

Course Dessert
Servings 16

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 box chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup cookie crumb topping
  • 16-32 gummy worms

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions.

  2. Spoon the mix evenly into 16 mini loaf pans. You can use liners or spray the pan. Watch the pan carefully for baking time and use a toothpick to check for doneness.

  3. Make the pudding mix according to package instructions.

  4. Once the cakes are cool, spoon a layer of the pudding over top of the cakes evenly.

  5. Sprinkle the cookie crumbs over the tops of the cakes and pudding.

  6. Using a BBQ skewer or toothpick to create a small hole, insert 1-2 gummy worms into each cupcake.

  7. Print and cutout the gravestone markers and tape a toothpick to the back of each one. Insert into the cupcakes at one end to create a mini wormy graveyard.

Voila! A mini-graveyard of cupcakes perfect for Halloween.

Super easy, but so cute and Halloween-y!
