DIY Chalkboard Plant Markers {from dollar store finds}

This weekend in Canada marks the unofficial start to the summer.

Highways will be packed with campers heading off for the weekend, and the lake will start to fill up with boat traffic again.

Often called “May long weekend”, the Victoria Day weekend around here is when people fully emerge from their winter hide-outs and head back outside to enjoy the beginning of the “summer” season.

Though it’s still a few more weeks until real “summer” begins, we are usually feeling pretty desperate by now to get back outside.

Those who don’t head out camping may spend some time doing yard work or gardening, and I got a bit of a head start on my gardening this season with my DIY kitchen herb garden last week.

If you saw that post, you may have noticed the cute little garden markers that I added to my pots?

And today I’m sharing how I made those DIY chalkboard plant markers from some dollar store finds.

To make these, I used a few simple items I found at my local dollar store: bamboo skewers and little wooden chalkboard tags. You can probably also find similar tags at a craft store. I also used my hot glue gun, and you may want to use a paint pen and some clear spray sealer meant for outdoors if you want your labels to be permanent.

I attached the chalkboard tags to the thick end of the bamboo skewer using my hot hot glue gun… and voila.

To make these markers more permanent, you probably want to use a paint pen and an outdoor clear sealer of some kind as regular chalk will wash off quite a bit in the rain.

For the images you see here, I just used regular chalk and I kind of like the rustic look of it.

Just label the herbs, stick them in your pots, and your done! I love the graphic contrast against the green of the herbs!
