5 Reasons to Love Natural Fiber Area Rugs and How to Make them More Comfy {Plus a Rug Pad Giveaway & Discount Code!}
Over the years we’ve owned a lot of rugs.
Like, more rugs that I care to count. Or admit to.
All of our early rugs were white or cream. I chose them because I wanted something solid to ground all the decorative changes that I like to make with furniture colour, pillows, drapes etc. I didn’t want a rug that was going to compete with or distract from the rest of the decor.
But a cream/white area rug? Come on. We had a big black lab and two little kids.
So needless to say that they never lasted more then a year or two.
I wish I had known then about natural fiber area rugs – but now that I do I don’t think I will ever go back.
Why I love natural fiber area rugs:
They are easy to keep clean and don’t show stains – especially the chunky jute type like we have under our dining room table. We’ve had this rug for a few years now and I have wiped up all manner of food spills with great success. I don’t think I would ever choose a different style of rug for under a dining table – especially one where children regularly eat.
Natural fiber rugs are very hard-wearing and stand up to families and pets. I even have one as a runner by my kitchen sink. I’ve tried a couple different runners in the kitchen but usually end up moving them to safer location like the bathroom or laundry room. I hate to ruin a beautiful rug with kitchen mess. But the spills I’ve had on my natural fiber kitchen runner have proved easy to clean. And the great thing is that if you do get a serious stain, you can flip it! Natural fiber rugs are {generally} the same on both sides!
Natural fiber rugs add a rustic and, dare I say, natural element to your decor. They work well to complement and tie together the natural wood accents in your furniture, baskets, and decor.
Natural fiber rugs are very calm and grounding in design. I love to use a lot of colour in my pillows, curtains, and art work. If I tried to add in a patterned rug, the whole room would look like a circus-gone-wild. It would just be too much. But a natural fiber rug calms and grounds the space and doesn’t compete visually with the rest of our decorative accents.
They can be found very affordably.
I have some great sources for where to purchase natural fiber area rugs affordably and I will be back later this week with a list for you!
They can be made comfy and cozy, with the right rug pad.
The issue that a lot of people complain about with natural fiber rugs is that they think they can’t be cozy and comfortable. Granted, the rug and runner in our kitchen and entry hall are not cozy- in fact they are a little bit scratchy and you might now want to lay down or sit on one. But the chunkier jute rugs are actually quite comfortable – and even more so if you add a good quality rug pad underneath them.
We recently ordered some rug pads from RugPadUSA for underneath our living room and entry hall rugs. I was thrilled that they were able to cut the pads to exactly the dimensions that I needed – especially considering we have a round jute rug in the living room.
We got the Eco-Plush pads for the living room and entry hall rug. They are nice and thick, provide a non-slip backing, and add an extra layer of comfort to the rug. Also, the rubber backing on the rugs pads designed for hardwood floors means that any spills will not leak through to the wood floor, keeping it more protected from watery accidents.
Having the pad under the rug has made it a lot cushier – which is important since our boys probably spend more time on the floor then they do on the furniture.
And right now at RugPadsUSA you can use the code PR15OFF for a 15% discount on your order.
RugPadUSA is also offering to giveaway a rug pad to one lucky reader –
any size up to 12×12!!
Good luck!

I love natural fiber rugs – they really do hold up well! Thanks for introducing me to the rug pad – I’m desperate for one under my kitchen runner.
They come in so handy in slippery spots like that – with no furniture to anchor your rug! I can’t believe how well our rug “sticks” now in the kitchen!
