How to Create a Hygge Guest Room for Your Holiday Visitors

Today I’m sharing some simple tips for how to create a hygge guest room for your holiday visitors.

The best part of the holidays is the extra time spent with family and good friends. I love it when our out of town family comes to visit, and on the occasion that we are able to host overnight guests from out of town, I truly enjoy setting up a space that will make them feel as welcome and cozy as possible. Hygge is the Danish art of enjoying moments, both with family and friends and on your own, that are cozy, charming, or special. And as a host over the holidays, you have the opportunity to create those hygge home moments for your guests with just a little effort and care. The perfect place to start is by creating a warm hygge guest room for your holiday visitors to enjoy.

The first factor to consider in a guest room is the bed. Make sure it is super comfortable. If the mattress is older, consider adding a foam layer or feather bed to add to it. Then layer in soft sheets, a cozy comforter and choose pillows that are plump and plush. Adding a couple of different pillow types so guests can choose what suits them can make all the difference to a good night’s sleep.

Next, create a cozy and comfortable nook or chair for your guests to relax in if they need a break or some quiet time from the holiday festivities. As much as being together is an important part of hygge, we all need a little rest and down time now and then, so setting up a comfy chair with a cozy throw blanket in your guest room can definitely add to it’s function and welcoming feel.

Set up your guest room for maximum comfort. Many people have their guest rooms in the basement, as we do, so it’s a good idea to think about the temperature of this space before your guests arrive. Our basement is notoriously cold during the winter months, so we add a small ceramic heater to each guest room to keep the space warm when in use.

The De’Longhi Capsule is perfect for this purpose! It’s compact and warms up in seconds in order to deliver instant heat. It’s also really safe to use throughout your home, as it has a special SafeHeat function with a thermal shutoff and tip-over switch (so it automatically shuts off and an alarm sounds if the heater is accidentally knocked over). Plus, the De’Longhi Capsule is stylish enough that it can fit in easily to your beautiful guest space.

Don’t forget the fun holiday decor! Add some festive fresh greenery or seasonal touches as an extension of your welcoming holiday home. I like to add fresh towels that are readily accessible so that guests have no doubt of what ones to use. If it’s feasible,  you can even stock your guest room with light snacks, water, and maybe even a little coffee maker so they can enjoy some peace and privacy in the morning before venturing out to join the fun.

A big part of hygge is also about getting outside for long walks and spending time together enjoying all things cozy during the dark and cold winter season. Think texture and warmth in your inviting space. Keep warm, friends!

  1. Hi! I looked through the Shop Our House page, but didn’t see the guest room on there! Can you tell me where this headboard is from?

Looks so beautiful and inviting! I’m also curious what it looks like now, in Frozen February!
