4F Craftin’: How to Make a Sweater-tastic Winter Pillow

I will show you how to easily make a winter pillow from a sweater!

Need a little winter warm up? You could try a hot cuppa orange spice tea… or perhaps craft up a little winter sweater pillow to bring some warmth to your space. A super easy DIY project that can be stitched up and sitting on your couch in the matter of an evening! The two I made are a feature in our “Winter” living room.

You will need:

  • An 1 old sweater, in good condition, no holes and not too smelly. I used my husband’s old sweater that I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED but that he found “way too hot” to wear. Thrift stores would be a good source for a sweater if you don’t have any victims in your own closet.
  • A pillow form. I bought two 12″x18″ lumbar style forms from Walmart. They are not down filled (I usually prefer down filled forms) because I thought the firmness of a poly fill would work better with the sweater’s stretchy-knit flexible-as-an-Olympic-gymnast nature.
  • Yarn, in a colour of your choice. I chose white because I wanted a chunky-funky-monkey contrasting stitch look to my finished product.
  •  A yarn needle.

A red sweater and a white pillow.

Figure out how your sweater “fabric” (once cut) will best fit the form of the pillow. I decided I wanted to get two pillows out of this one sweater so I decided to cut along the side seams all the way up and slice the arms right off that baby (see pic below):. The sweater stretches amazingly so it is okay if the piece you cut seems a little small for the form at first.

Cutting the sweater.

Now, just a few more simple steps and you will have a sweater pillow to help you lounge the night away:

  1. I folded my sweater in half (with the folded half acting as a finished edge. I then stitched up the one side and along the “bottom” of the pillow.
  2. I then inserted my pillow form and cut the last edge of the sweater “fabric” to the appropriate length.
  3. I finished by stitching the last side together still using my visible chunky white thread.
  4. One Tip: If the edge you are stitching along is not a finished edge of the sweater (and is a cut edge which could lead to pulls etc.) then gently fold in the two cut edges as you stitch to prevent snags and pulls of the sweater fabric. Now, enjoy! I know I will be cuddling up to mine while I watch the next episode of House Hunters International (warm, sunny location, anyone??).

Enjoy your chunky-funky-monkey stitched sweater-tastic cozy pillow! Warm up your winter tonight!

And remember, my housie friends, HOME wasn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey!
