Simple Light & Bright Summer Decorating Ideas
Today I’m sharing my simple light and bright summer decorating ideas and our simple summer home tour.
I can hardly believe that it is summer home tour time once again! It’s been a fairly cool and rainy June so far. I just hope that we didn’t use up all our summer weather in March and April this year when we had unseasonably high temps and sunny days. Every year around this time I do start to crave a change of seasonal decor. I want something simpler and more relaxed – more blues and greens and not so much of the pink that I love decorating with in the spring. I crave a cleaner space with fewer things… lots of white with pops of greenery and summery plants. Keeping things simple and easy and not cluttered or fussy is a perfect recipe for your summer decor.
This week is the Seasonal Simplicity Home Tour Series, and 30 talented bloggers are sharing part of their home with you, all ready for summer! Be sure to see the bottom of this post for the links to their tours.
At our home, the outside always looks at its best in the late spring/early summer before things get too dry and hot…
Do you remember how it looked last year at this time?
Our summer front porch decor is a very simple combination of my DIY dollar store lemon wreath and two potted summer ferns flanking the door. I watch for these ferns every year at the Walmart garden center and always buy several; two for the front and a few for the back deck (which I can’t wait to show you next week!).
One project that I really need to share a DIY on very soon is our box molding wall in the entry – and we used a similar box molding style in our dining room as well as in the master bedroom. These walls are definitely some of my favourite feature walls that we’ve ever added to a space. I mean, it’s hard to imagine this huge wall now without the molding.
Our living room looks almost the same as in the spring, but with a focus on just blues and greens, as I mentioned. It feels calmer to me with this palette and is an easy-breezy ready for summer look. I always feel like blue and green are actually neutral colours because they are so prominent in nature, though I know they are technically considered neutral!
I shared our summer mantel a couple of weeks back, including my free printable line drawing art in 4 different tropical leaf designs. The seascape was actually the inspiration for the living room colour scheme and summer decor this year; I’ve had this piece for years and never grow tired of it. It was a thrift store find that I freshened up with some white paint on the old frame.
I like to use a lot of greenery and not so many florals in the summer, despite the fact that there are so many summery blooms out there. The greenery just feels fresher and calmer and more simple.
As I mentioned, you can find these printable line drawings (as well as two more designs) over in this post.
I had the talented Dasha Armstrong come and take some photographs for me a couple of weeks back, and most of the pictures I’m sharing today are from her. I just really wanted to a good quality round of pictures for this entire house as we will be moving soon enough. I’ve mentioned before that we plan to build a house within the next year, so I thought the timing was perfect to capture it as it is, after all of our major renovations are complete. She was able to capture some pictures of this little “in-between” family TV space that we have that I can never quite seem to take a good picture of. It’s actually a space in our home where we spend a lot of our time together if we watch a movie as a family, and it’s definitely my boys’ favourite perch.
It opens up to the kitchen and dining room, so I can always see them when I’m working at the kitchen island and they’re hanging out in the family room.
Things stayed pretty similar in the kitchen for summer, though I did bring in some pops of yellow in the flowers and lemons, as you can see on the shelf in the background.
The dining room has the last remaining hints of pink in the house, as it looks so pretty with the beautiful roses that I get in supply from my Mom’s garden. They have built a new retirement home and will be selling their house (my childhood home) soon, so I will definitely miss the beautiful roses and peonies that she shares with me every year.
It’s really hard to get a full overall shot of our kitchen because of the shape and size of it. All the white mixed with the warm wood tones and baskets feels super summery to me, so it doesn’t need much more to adorn it for the seasonal. Clean, simple, fresh, and easy – what summer living should be about!

Hey there! This is the EXACT color i want on my kitchen cabinets– can you share what you used?
Hi Leah, the cabinets are actually that colour – it’s called Grimslov Gray from Ikea. I believe when we had a colour match made at our local Benjamin Moore in order to do a couple of touch ups, that the colour was quite similar to Benjamin Moore “fusion”. I hope this helps.
Hello, do you happen to remember what color paint you used for your kitchen cabinets? Your home looks beautiful and such a calming respite!
