4F Craftin’: How-To Make Worldly Map Magnets

I have seen this pinteresting idea floating around online-land many a time and was thrilled to see my friend Brit creating these fun little beauties during a crafty-nighty gathering with some of my gals. They make great little gifts that can be easily personalized by choosing maps or words (from old dictionary pages) that suit!magnet collage 3

Gather Your Supplies:

  • Clear glass ‘rocks’ – I bought mine at a local dollar store in the floral garb section.
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint brush
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Paper of your choice – I used maps from an old atlas I picked up at a G-sale. I also made some using old dictionary pages…
  • Little magnets (see advice regarding this below)
  • Good ol’ glue gun

Get Craftin’:

1) Start by wiping off and cleaning your glass rocks (they come pretty dusty).

2) Next choose your map or paper, lay the rock on top of the map or paper and trace the shape of the glass rock.

3) Cut said traced shape out using your scissors (in case you weren’t sure).

4) Repeat this step for as many magnets as you want to make before moving on to the ‘Mod Podge’ stage… makes things a little simpler to complete this crafty-craft in stages.

5) Get out your Mod Podge and brush. Put down some scrap paper to lay your ‘podged’ rocks on while they dry.

6) Apply Mod Podge to the flat back of the glass rock using your brush, place the map/paper on top of the flat-mod-podged-back, gently press down, and add more Mod Podge on top of the paper/map to seal the back.

7) After they have dried I added a second coat of Mod Podge just to ensure they were nice and firmly attached and sealed.

8) You are now ready to add your magnet!

WARNING: I first tried using sticky magnet strip, but this quickly fell off and some magnets that I had gifted to others were found to fall to the ground and smash!! EEEEEEKKKK!! To AVOID THIS MORBID EMBARRASSMENT use your trusty-ol’ hot-glue gun to attach your magnet strip. Otherwise, hot glue on some of these babies:

I bought mine at a local dollar store. And, while they are thicker and cause your overall magnet to be thicker than the magnet strip does, they are more powerful and hold better on your chosen magnetic surface.

Now put those fab little puppies to use (the FUNCTIONAL part of 4F Craftin’):
