DIY Christmas Light String Garland

Today I’m sharing a simple and adorable DIY Christmas Light String Garland craft that is a fun way to add a colourful unique flair to this year’s Christmas decorating.

Wow! Two Christmas posts in one week… the holiday season is heating up already!

All our Christmas decor is still relegated to a multitude of bins laid out over the entire floor space of our spare room in the basement, but the crafts and planning have begun.  I’ve been busy listing and brainstorming what I want to make, bake, gift, and share this holiday season and I’m getting excited about the lights that will soon be lighting up our home.

It’s feeling so dark in the evenings with the onset of daylight savings time this past weekend, and I have a special place in my heart for Christmas lights.  Today’s simple and thrifty DIY Christmas craft project is inspired by classic Christmas lights. I’ve always loved the cute, cheery shape and colours of them, so why not use them as more than lights?  Today I’m showing you how I turned some inexpensive Christmas light bulbs into a fun and colourful string Christmas garland.

This was a really quick and easy DIY project to make, and I used inexpensive colourful Christmas lights and baker’s twine that I picked up at Walmart.  I also used my hot glue gun, scissors, and a measuring tape to help me space the light bulbs evenly along the garland.  By choosing the colours of bulbs that suit your decor, you can easily customize this project to work with your favourite Christmas colours.  I opted for red, green, and blue, which I think have a classic and slightly vintage-Christmas feel.

I alternated the colours and spaced the bulbs every six inches.  To attach the twine, I just ran my hot glue along the bottom edge of the metal piece on each light bulb, wrapped the twine around once and then added a bit more glue to wrap the twine another quarter turn in order to keep the bulbs lying straight along the holiday garland.

I love how these classic, crisp Christmas colours pop and add such a fun, cheery feel.  I had been considering going with a Scandi chic feel this Christmas, but now I’m reconsidering a brighter and more colourful Christmas look.  Hmm… what to do?!?

I’m not sure where the final resting place for this garland will be, as I haven’t actually started decorating yet.  I think it could be a cute addition to a number of little vignettes around the house.  I wonder where it will end up!?

I’m getting really excited to let the Christmas decorating begin – how about you?!
