Tween Boy Adventure Bedroom Makeover Reveal
Today I’m sharing the complete room reveal of my youngest son’s tween boy adventure bedroom makeover as part of the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge.
It’s here! Reveal day!
I always love room reveals… it’s so fun to look back at the changes that have occurred over the past weeks. It’s easy to forget how much work goes into a room makeover at the end of it. And I love that doing a big “reveal” post (and on a timeline), always forces me to complete a makeover 100%. No cutting little corners or leaving things for later… reveal posts are an awesome way to actually get a job completely done.
Take my other son’s bedroom for instance. We did most of the renovation work on it just after moving in…except for sanding and painting his new trim. I’ve never shared a before/after/reveal of his room and so I’ve never forced myself to put on my painting clothes and get that one little job done. Soon, I promise, soon…
But today is all about our youngest son, Finn’s, bedroom reveal. We took a very dark and super cramped feeling tiny bedroom and turned it into a bright and fun, much more open, functional and organized playful adventure themed room for him.
I LOVE how it turned out and I can’t wait to share all the decor details with you today…
I want to thank my friend Stephanie, from Casa Watkins Living, for organizing this whole challenge including all of the sponsor involvement, and for inviting me to be part of it. There are so many amazing home decor bloggers who are sharing their room reveals today as well. I can’t wait to spend a good chunk of time perusing them all.
Be sure to check out the bottom of this post for the links to all their room reveals!
And now… for the reveal!
Just for a quick trip down memory lane, here is the room that we started with…

And now with organized bookshelves and a small desk area.
What we did:
The first week, I shared our before and then got started on the project! I tackled a purge of Finn’s closet, dressers, and “junk” bins (if you have a hoarder 9 year old child you know what I mean). I also started the painting project, but didn’t get it finished until Week 2. I also reached out to our talented friend who does a lot of woodwork about my headboard idea and he whipped it up and had it delivered to our door before I’d even started painting!
Week 2 I finished and shared my inspiration board and ordered everything for the room. For this room makeover, I ordered two new bookcases, a small console table/desk, and a modern metal platform bed frame. I also ordered this duvet cover, these shams, and these curtains from Roostery, as well as the gorgeous rug from Mohawk Home. I also ordered the main art prints from this talented artist on Etsy, and Finn chose this mountain bike prints from an artist named Sketchy Trails.
Week 3 was a bit of a waiting game for furnishings and decor. The next couple of weeks we setup his furniture and it was out with the old, in with the new. We hung the curtain rod and his new drapes, and I picked up some nightstands from Jysk and stained the unfinished wooden drawers to match the headboard. I also sourced some wall mounted plug-in sconces from HomeSense and we hung those.
The fourth week I finished by hanging the art and created some new “adventure” prints (using images we’ve taken) for his new gallery wall above his desk/console. I shared how I create a gallery wall in my Instagram stories and you can still see that in my highlights if you are curious! It’s more of an art than a Science…
And now… the last room on our main floor is finally “done”! It only took us just over a year to get here:) It feels great to have the upstairs “done” (aside from the trim painting in my oldest’s room), and it feels even better now that we are finally getting this house totally organized.
When I first began designing the room, I used the rug as a jumping off point for the colour scheme of the rest of the room. This gorgeous rug, from Mohawk Home, definitely did not disappoint. The colours are exactly what I hoped for, and I was over-the-moon with the quality of the rug once I received it. So much thicker, softer, and more plush then I expected it to be. I honestly think it might be the nicest and coziest rug we have in the house (and that is saying something, since we have 19!). We used a rug pad, also from Mohawk Home (which I’ll be sharing in my Instagram stories), and the extra layer not only holds the rug perfectly in place, but makes it that much softer and more comfortable. I think a comfy rug is the best way to treat your feet when you hop out of bed in the morning!
After selecting the rug, I moved onto the bedding. At first, I considered on of the beautiful wallpaper options that Spoonflower offers and considered several designs by the artist/designer Nouveau Bohemian. Upon consulting Finn he opted for a solid dark navy wall rather than wallpaper, so I focused instead on integrating some fun pattern on his bed and in his curtains. I ordered his bedding and curtains from Roostery, which is a Spoonflower company that has an absolute plethora of made-to-order designs (the same ones as on Spoonflower for fabric or wallpaper), but they make these designs into everything home decor! The quality of the duvet cover, pillow covers, and curtains are all over-the-top fabulous and I honestly couldn’t be happier with what I chose and how it turned out.
The art above Finn’s bed was ordered from this great shop on Etsy. The artist was so helpful about having things shipped out to me quickly, and the whole family loves the design. I think my older son is jealous, since mountain biking has become their shared passion.
I just love how Finn’s room turned out, and since I spend a good amount of time in it every evening reading with him, I’m glad that it doesn’t feel so cramped and messy and dark anymore. But most importantly, Finn absolutely loves his new space and is taking a lot of pride in keeping it tidy (let’s hope that continues;).
I am honoured to have been able to partner with some amazing sponsors for this challenge. I partnered with Roostery for the duvet cover, shams, lumbar pillow, and curtains. I also partnered with Mohawk Home for the gorgeous plush rug.

Love the makeover! What is the light/white paint color called??
What is the size of the room? It looks like the room has the same layout for my son’s room and I am having the worst time trying to figure out how to organize it and get a full size bed in there.
Hello Allyson,
The room is about 9’6 by 10’6/11′ I believe – I wish I could re-measure but we’ve since sold this house and move. One thing I often do is use some graph paper to draft out my space, adding in the furniture to scale to figure out exactly what size pathways I will have etc. before committing to purchasing furniture. Hope that helps!

So beautiful and fun! I recently decided to do my sons accent wall in Navy and him and his dad love mountain biking! I’m so glad I’ve found this post! I checked out the MB artist, do you know what size of art you purchased and what size frame? Thank you so much!!
Where is the headboard from? I love the live edge! Would love to get something like that for my son!
This room is so fun! My son loves mountain biking as well. I love the mountain biking prints!I love the headboard as well. Would you mind sharing where you got the headboard from?
Hello!
We had a friend who built it for us – with some live edge wood that he sourced from a local hardware store. It’s two pieces that he attached to look like one by attaching a piece of wood along the back. Hope that helps a little!
Krista
First what a great transformation—How chic and manly is the bed wall, and still the kid on the working wall. Can’t beat the theme or the colors with the light bouncing off the white wall. But, I can’t tell you how long it to load this page, see your photos and your wonderful post. Might want to pull back the ads just a tad—-when readers become frustrated loading content—they sure as aren’t going to wait around for the ads to load–too many flashing and moving!
Thanks for the heads up Sandi – I’ll look into my load time and see what the issue is!
This room looks just great! Love the prints over the bed. Love the fabric choices — they are inspired! Love the way the closet coordinates with the room. The dark wall behind the headboard makes everything pop.
Thank you Elle – I love how everything pops against the dark wall, too, especially the headboard!
Oh my gosh, you did such a great job! Boys rooms are the hardest for me but you created the perfect space that is so clean and chic, yet perfect for a kid. Love the closet and desk organization too.
Hi Kathryn, it would be fun to get to do a girl’s room! Alas, two boys… and thankfully he loves how it turned out!
Love this room! Great choices for all May I ask—what is the navy paint color behind the bed? Thanks.
Of course – and I’ll add it to the post in a more obvious spot:) It’s Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore. Thanks!
This is awesome, Krista!! I love the sophisticated, yet playful vibe. Such a great space for a tween. It feels fresh and inviting. Beautiful job! 😉
Thanks Rachael – he is not quite a tween yet but I wanted a room that would reflect his interests and grow with him. Hopefully we’ve found that balance!
What a fun space! That wall color is so great!
Thanks Carmel, I’ve been itching to use Hale Navy again somewhere since we used in the bathroom at our old house. Now I’m plotting where else it could go…
Another great kid room for the books! This is going to be a great transitional space for him as he grows. I hope he loves it!
Thanks Ariel- I agree, I tried to make it a bit more mature so it would grow with him. I think it will!
This is SO inspiring! I love this new layout for the room. It feels more mature and looks so much more functional. I’m already thinking of how I can better use my kiddo’s room now.
Hi Corinna, I love having the bed centred more on the wall instead of to the one side, so downsizing and getting rid of the dresser that had been there was critical. I absolutely love the lower bed, it makes the whole room feel so much more open and bigger!
This is awesome! What a lucky kid! Love the headboard and the deep color on the walls! Way to go!
Thanks Haneen! It’s amazing what a difference some small(ish) changes make, right?!
Oh how fun is this space?! I bet he loves it! That headboard is gorgeous!
He totally loves it – especially his mountain bike prints. I’m glad to have finally given him a nice space for himself and feel bad it took so long to get there. That’s what I love about challenges – they force you to get to those jobs you’ve been putting off!
What boy wouldn’t love this room?! I love the dark color on the wall, and that rug is fantastic!!!
Thank you April! I love the rug too – I was so happy with the quality of it when it arrived. Yay for small wins!
Wow! What a lucky boy! I love the bookshelves, the wall gallery and the use of the closet. Also- thanks for reminding me to PRINT some pictures of the boys for their rooms. So inspired to give our boys rooms some love!
Thank you Heather – it’s such a great and easy way to add art by using some of the fab pictures that I’m sure you have of your kids. Those ones were off my phone, even!
it looks SO good, krista! i love the headboard and that wall color!
Thanks Cassie, I’m really glad that I went with the dark solid colour instead of wallpaper, as I’d originally been thinking. I feel like in the tiny space it works best and really makes the headboard stand out (I love that headboard, too!).
