Cheap & Easy DIY Printed Seasonal Pillows
Today I’m sharing how to make your own beautiful DIY printed seasonal pillows, like these peony pillows that I created using only a plain white pillow cover, my computer, my computer printer, a pair of scissors, and an iron!
I’m pretty excited about today’s DIY project! It’s one of those things I’ve been pondering about trying for, literally, a few years now, and I finally got around to doing it. I bought the supplies, and started thinking about it… worrying that it wasn’t going to turn out. And then I decided to give it a go and just see. I mean, what did I have to lose?! And thank goodness I did, because I am absolutely in love with the finished product!
I can’t wait to share how I made these super pretty (and cheap and easy) DIY printed seasonal throw pillows. And I have to say, this isn’t the last season I’ll be making these. I’m already thinking about some pretty designs for summer!
When you are perusing the aisles of your favourite decor shops each season, do you ever just about have a heart-attack over how expensive some of the seasonal items are? I mean, it can be upwards of $40 or $50 dollars for a pretty, seasonal pillow that will only adorn your sofa for a few months at best. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely do not mind spending a decent amount of money on my good quality long-term/evergreen decor items like non-seasonal pillows. I want ones that will stand up to the test of time (and the test of my two boys and my dog!). But when it comes to short term, possibly trendy, seasonal decor I have a harder time shelling out.
That’s where these throw pillows enter. I actually saw floral pillows at a couple of my favourite decor haunts for around the $40 to $50 dollar mark (each!) and I made these ones for a total of $5 per pillow cover along with about $2-5 worth of transfer paper each. I mean, come on! And the truth is, you would never know. They totally look THAT good.
Would you guess I had made these with iron-on transfer paper?
Materials:
I used two plain white pillow covers from Ikea (the inserts are also from there) – they were $4.99 Cad each (so I imagine they are even less expensive in the US). You can find some similar ones on Amazon here.
I also used my hp printer, some printer transfer paper that I picked up at Michaels, though I also sourced some from Amazon if you want to order it online.
All you need to do is come up with a design on your computer. I’ve added my peony designs to my free printable library, where all my email subscribers can access them. You can sign up for my printable library here:

You can see the design for one of the seasonal pillows below (though I ended up cutting off some of the greenery because I was too lazy to cut neatly around it all). Follow the instructions included with your transfer paper for printing on the correct side of you paper (and make sure to do a test sheet on regular paper).
Cut out it looked like this (once I skipped out on the tricky parts)…
I laid them upside down on my clean, ironed white pillow cover…
The other, more random design pillow, looked like this once laid out…
And then I ironed it! Once again, closely and carefully follow the instructions included with your transfer paper for this step.
Once done and cooled, I peeled it off.
Done!
How pretty are these pillows??
The colour quality is really much better than I thought it would be…
