Surf Style Bedroom Week Two Check-in {ORC}

Well, a week has passed already.

Already?!?!

We’ve had a big project on the go around here that has taken up many extra hours and it hasn’t been my ORC project. I’ll be back to share the details (on that project) tomorrow, but for now let’s talk a little bit about how things are going on the One Room Challenge front.

Have you heard of the One Room Challenge before? It is a blogger challenge hosted twice a year by Linda, formerly at Calling It Home and now at the Official One Room Challenge website. Bloggers try to makeover a room in their home over six short weeks! And really, it’s four weeks, because the first week is where we share our plan and the last week is our reveal.

If you aren’t sure what I’m rambling on about, then you can also check out my “before” post and plans over here.

In a nutshell (which I just might find myself hiding in during this ambitious project), we are giving our youngest son’s room a makeover. Part of that is figuring out storage and organizing solutions for his new bedroom, because right now he doesn’t have good places to put things… which leads to a LOT of clutter. Another side of this makeover is the style side. We’re going with a surf style bedroom design (I shared all kinds of inspiration here), and the biggest projects are installing some beautiful Metrie Complete Pre-Painted Shiplap along with a big wave mural.

This week I…

1)Sourced some adorable bedding from HomeSense.

I love the crisp blue plaid white the touch of yellow in it, which ties in with the curtains and throw pillows we are using. The grey shark sheets are Finn’s favourite!

2) Started to plan the gallery wall, and had some photographs from our recent trip to Hawaii printed up in large size at Costco…

I’m so excited about pulling together this gallery wall but haven’t decided exactly how I want to frame or hang it yet.

3) I ordered this cute shark head from Etsy! Isn’t it perfect with this scheme??

I ordered it from here, and am totally thrilled with the quality! I can’t wait to see it up on the shiplap walls!

4) Finally, I played around with his room setup…(I shared all these on my Instagram stories)

The original layout had his bed sticking directly out from the wall perpendicular to the window. The thing we don’t like about this layout is that it makes the closet difficult to access because the bed is quite long in this small sized room.

As you checkout these layouts, please keep in mind that the walls will not stay as they are with the pegboard – that is all going to be shiplap and the wall perpendicular to the window is going to have a large wave mural (details here).

So we flipped it around, and tried the bed against the wall…

The thing we don’t like about that layout is that if feels a bit odd with the curtains behind the bed frame. The positive of this layout is that there is a good amount of space in the middle of the room and it feels quite open.

Lastly, we switched it around so that the head of his bed is against the hallway wall…

The desk went under the window, which is always nice for the light and view, and the bookcase is tucked beside the closet. Ignore the half-removed vinyl sticker… it used to say “good vibes only”, though I suppose “goo vibes” is pretty suitable for a seven year old boy.

This scenario leaves less open space for play (though he has a whole playroom for when he has friends over), but I can really visualize the wall behind the headboard with the sharks head above it. Hmmm… Finn also says he likes this final layout the best, but we may still try again. There are only so many ways you can rearrange a small bedroom with an enormous elephant bed. Maybe we should sell that bed and try something else?? (though my Dad did build it so we are a bit sentimental about it…)

Anyhow, that’s Week One around here. Not a whole lot happened. Here’s to hoping this week is much more productive, now that the OTHER big project is done.

Tell me which layout you think is the best in the comments below!

  1. I absolutely adore the Sharks head you purchased from Etsy. It looks amazing, so much so I have to visit there website and buy one. Thank you for creating this useful resource.

  2. I prefer the first layout except I would only have one nightstand so that there is more space by the window. As for the bed, how about just using the headboard connected to a metal frame? You could use the footboard to make a little bench for use somewhere else in the house. I wouldn’t put the desk under the window as it makes it awkward to close the blinds or curtains. Frankly, I had desks for all of my kids and they hardly ever used them! They preferred to sit on their bed or the floor or hang out in the kitchen to do their homework. Desks just became messy dust collectors. Since the room is so small, less furniture is the way to go (bed, nightstand and dresser). If you have space, put a small bookcase with a comfy beanbag chair for a reading nook.

  3. I like the one with the bed by the window. Could you turn the bed so it goes under the window? Also, I agree the arrow should be at eye level and painted a contrasting color, maybe the yellow color that is in the curtains. It would really pop.

    1. Hi Cathy,
The arrow may or may not make it into the final design… it was just a remnant from that being my craft room, though it might fit in with the “gallery wall” I’m doing for Finn. Unfortunately the headboard is so high that the bed can’t go under the window – though we might do some surgery to the bed to make it a little less massive!

  4. I like the bed in the second set-up better – not in front of the window. I like the bookcase beside the window. I don’t think you have enough room for the chairs with the desk in front of the window. Please move that arrow down on the wall at eye level. It is much too high and should be painted in a contrast to the wall.
I think you might get really tired of other people’s comments on your room. You are a brave lady!!!

    1. Hi Barb,
The arrow isn’t part of the design plan, it’s just that we haven’t done the walls yet and it was a leftover from when this room was my craft room before the boys got their own rooms. We are planning to do a wallpaper mural and then paneling on the walls – you can see the design plan here: https://thehappyhousie.porch.com/finns-room-makeover-project-the-before-plans/ . I don’t mind people’s ideas at all – isn’t it fun to look at a room before it’s remodelled and think of what you would do? I know I redecorate other people’s rooms in my head all the time.

  5. I would center the bed under the window. Paint chest blue to go with theme and move it to the foot of the bed. Desk against wall between closet and door. Bookcase between closet and window. Shop your house for a small nite stand for far side of bed or even a floor lamp with small table built in. Hard to make bed when it’s against the wall. Loose one of the chairs at the desk. Might paint trim on desk blue and back of bookcase shelves to brighten and coordinate with theme. Love the 10 week challenge! Good luck with the little guys room!

    1. Hi Lisa,
Good ideas, thanks!! I think a bed under the window could be cute, but our current headboard is definitely way to tall for that – it goes part way up the window and looks really odd, unfortunately. I may replace those desk chairs, and just get him one that slides better under his desk to save on space as well.

  6. I like the last layout the best. I like how the desk is under the window and bookcase to the side of the window. And doesn’t that night stand fit perfectly on the angled wall!!!

    1. Hi Dawn,
It does seem to fit really well that way, and I also like the look of the desk under the window… but we’ll have to see if Finn likes sleeping with his head right by his bedroom door. I think he didn’t enjoy it the first night, trying to get to sleep.

  7. I like the last layout the best. The window & curtains look symmetrical, and the bed fits beautifully on the wall it is on. There’s also room for the bookcase & closet. My boys (midlife now) never played in their rooms. They played either outside or in the room I was in. Homework was even done at the kitchen table. I think they felt closed off in their rooms, although they decorated the rooms.

    1. Hi Patsy!
Finn usually only goes in his room the odd time to colour of do little projects, but doesn’t “play” in there a lot. They like to hang out in our main family space as well, and even use their playroom only when they have friends over. Thanks for your thoughts!
