Teen Boy Bedroom Makeover: Week 4 Progress

Teen boy bedroom makeover progress during week 4 of the One Room Challenge. Designing a vintage modern style teen boy bedroom.

Welcome back to my One Room Challenge – Week Four! If you’ve been following along the last couple of weeks then you know that I’ve just started the first big makeover project of our new build house; adding character to our oldest son’s bedroom. Here is my original before post for this project.

The One Room Challenge

If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge (hereafter I’ll call it the ORC), I’ll bring you up-to-date. It’s a 8-week long challenge in which decorators, designers, and homeowners pick a space in their home to completely update. There are feature designers for each session, as well as many guest participants (like myself) who join in each week. You can read more about this event here.

I’ve done the One Room Challenge a few times in the past, and I love how the challenge pushes you to try and get things done in a timely manner! Making decisions can be hard for me at times, so I love the extra pressure. That way I don’t spend weeks overthinking when I know in my gut it’s the right choice for a room. It’s also fun to design a room nearly from scratch. Often we are adding little touches here and there and trying to make it all work with our previous items, but whenever I’ve tackled a room for the ORC I give it a completely different look with a lot of new pieces and finds.

I shared my original plans for this room makeover in this article.

More changes this week…

Well, my learning from this week was don’t take online retailers at face value. If they promise Canada-wide free shipping, they might actually just be saying that to get you to order something then they email you after and tell you that shipping is going to cost $135. Even when their site clearly states “CANADA WIDE FREE SHIPPING”. Needless to say I’m pretty disillusioned and disappointed with Wazo Furniture!

Argh.

It was pretty frustrating and disappointing to discover that we could not get the chair we wanted unless I was willing to pay an extra 25% of it’s value having it shipped. And I just wasn’t… we might be getting quite a few new pieces, but there is a budget here people! It was already a bit of a stretch to order the chair, so tacking on an extra $135 to ship a $500 chair seemed excessive. I drew the line and let it go.

So, the Wazo Furniture chair is out, and this one from Bouclair is in…

The Updated Design Plan…

I think it will work well, and definitely suits the feel of the room. Here is the design board now that I’ve made that change, as well as chosen and ordered Leif’s poster art from Photowall…

I’m also toying with going back to a faux leather desk chair, since I’m not blowing the budget on the Wazo chair. I found this super cute one (above) at Wayfair on a great sale through WAY DAYS, and I think I’ll order it today!

What do you think of the art posters? I ordered them through Photowall, the same company where I ordered the mural from. Leif picked them and is really excited about how they look. I’m planning to hang them above and to the side of the desk on the non-mural side wall. I can’t wait to see how they look!

This week’s project…

I also started on his nightstand makeover, just this morning actually. So far they’ve had one coat of Coal Black Fusion Mineral Paint. Even after just one coat, I can tell they’re going to look great painted black! They were cute before, but it was just TOO MUCH GREY around his bed! (Remember the before pics of his room?)

Before…

And one coat of black paint…

I’ll get the second (and maybe third?) coat done today, and then add on the new handles I ordered. This week I had a brainwave that I should switch up the handles to leather! Smart, right? I ordered these ones from Amazon…

What do we have so far?

The rug came Monday, and the lights and bookcase came last Friday.

The desk is supposed to arrive today, and the green pillow covers as well as the leather lumbar pillow arrived this morning..

So, things are definitely falling into place!

Since the green pillows are here now, I’m starting to look at some paint colour options and might have a chance to get going on that this weekend. I’m going to look at a bunch of different options before deciding, and I think I’ll share a post about my favourite dark greens once I narrow them down.

My TO DO List…

Done, or nearly…

  • Update the nightstands with black paint and new hardware.
  • Select and order or make art for the far wall.

Still to do:

  • Choose a paint colour.
  • Paint the lower half of the walls dark green.
  • Install the wallpaper mural.
  • Order a new desk chair.
  • Build and style his new bookcase.
  • Build his new desk.
  • Determine the final furniture layout.
  • Install the lamps on the wall beside his bed.
  • Sell his current bookcases and desk.
  • MAYBE… give his closet a little decorative upgrade, depending on time.

I don’t want to jinx myself, but I think we are in good shape! I’m feeling like I can probably get the walls painted in one (full) day, and the mural hung in a few hours. The furniture building will probably take a third day, and then styling another one.

I can’t wait to see this space come together, and I know Leif is excited about it too!
