Easy Ways to Decorate with Pumpkins

Today I’m sharing a collection of ideas for easy ways to decorate with pumpkins, both real and faux pumpkin decor ideas.

Pumpkins, Pumpkins, everywhere!  Have you seen them everywhere you go lately? They’re in big bins at the grocery store, and the pumpkin patches are in full swing each weekend for the pre-Halloween harvest.

My boys get excited once they see the pumpkins come out, because it means that Halloween is on the way.  But decorating with pumpkins can extend well beyond the typical carved Jack-O-Lanterns adorning your porch at the end of the October each year.  Whether real or faux, there are so many cute ways to decorate with pumpkins and there are few things that are such a clear symbol of fall.

Today I’ve gathered some of my favourite DIY pumpkin decorating ideas, as well as ways that I’ve used real pumpkins to decorate our home (indoors and out!) for fall.  I’m also joining a group of friends who are sharing their cute pumpkin decorating ideas today. Make sure to check out what they are sharing at the bottom of today’s post.

One of my favourite spots to decorate with pumpkins is before we even get inside the house; they are such a simple way to add a fun and cute fall feel to your front porch or entry.  We have a new set of stairs going down to the driveway, and I can’t wait to cute jack-o-lanterns this year to adorn each stair.  But for the time being, I’ve stacked a bunch of pumpkins, both classic orange and small white ones, all around our front stoop.  You can see our full fall porch tour here.

A couple of years back, I helped a good friend decorate her front porch and she picked up this massive basket from HomeSense to stack full of leaves and pumpkins.  I love the look, and wish I had space for it on our front stoop!  You can see her full fall porch tour here -it’s quite a spectacular tour because they have a stunning, grand entrance to their home.

In the past I’ve also used some really unique and interesting pumpkins on our front porch and really love the texture they added.  How crazy and ugly-cute is this warty one?!  See this full fall porch tour here.

I also love to decorate with pumpkins indoors, though I generally save the “real” ones for my tablescapes.

I’ve also used a real pumpkin to create a vase for a floral arrangement.  I did a few of these for my Thanksgiving table a couple of years ago. You can read the tutorial for this DIY pumpkin vase project here.

Around the house, I always decorate for fall with an assortment of various faux pumpkins.  I’m partial to ones made with wood or raffia, as I love the rustic feel they give, but I also have some really pretty velvet ones that I adore and used this year in a vignette on our coffee table.  Faux pumpkins are the perfect way to add a fall feel on your mantel or shelves, and you can store them and reuse them from year to year!

It’s also fun and easy to create a seasonal wreath for autumn using pumpkins.  This year I used a small pack from the dollar store, mixed with some pine cones and fall berry sprays, to create a super easy and thrifty DIY grapevine wreath.  See the full tutorial here.

I also painted some dollar store pumpkins with white (and gold for the stems), and used them to finish off this high-end style wreath that I made last season.  It might be one of my all time favourite seasonal wreaths.  I share the DIY tutorial for it here.

You might have sensed the theme of using dollar store pumpkins in my previous couple of fall DIY pumpkin projects.  I also used a couple of bags of dollar store pumpkins to make these adorable black and white sharpie pumpkins – you can read the full tutorial for these DIY black & white hand sketched sharpie pumpkins here.

I also wrapped some inexpensive dollar store pumpkins in an old sweater that I picked up at a thrift store… see how to make these cute pumpkins in this post.
