Teen Boy Bedroom Makeover Reveal

The full reveal of a vintage modern style Teen Boy Bedroom Makeover for the One Room Challenge including sources.

How to design a cozy teen boy bedroom decorated in green, grey, black, and warm leather tones.

It’s reveal day!

Leif’s teen boy bedroom is done!

Everybody in our family loves it; so much so that my youngest now wants his room redone. He is super jealous of the amazing Photowall mural that we installed in his brother’s room and wants something special like that in his space. The mural definitely makes a dramatic impact, but I love pretty much every change that we made in this space. From the wallpaper and paint, to the furnishing and layout changes, it turned out better than I had even hoped it would!

Welcome back to my One Room Challenge – the final reveal! If you’ve been following along the last several weeks then you know that I’ve been working on tackling the first big makeover project of our new build house; adding character to our oldest son’s bedroom. Here is my original before post for this project.

The One Room Challenge

If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge (hereafter I’ll call it the ORC), I’ll bring you up-to-date. It’s a 8-week long challenge in which decorators, designers, and homeowners pick a space in their home to completely update. There are feature designers for each session, as well as many guest participants (like myself) who join in each week. You can read more about this event here.

And today is the day that I get to share all the details of this fresh teen boy bedroom makeover!

After – Teen Boy Bedroom Makeover Room Reveal

The wallpaper mural

I shared the details on installing this fabulous wallpaper mural from Photowall in this article.

Although we didn’t end up being able to order my original chair choice due to shipping issues, Leif loves this chair we found from Bouclair. And it ended up costing me less than 1/2 of the price of the other one, so maybe it was a win after all!

The nightstands

I’m so thrilled with how the nightstands came out!

These are the original nightstands that we already owned, and I gave them a couple of quick coats of Coal Black paint by Fusion Mineral Paint. I also switched out the handles for these leather pulls I ordered from Amazon. Didn’t they turn out amazingly well?

Layout change: the bed under the window

I freed up a ton of space on the tiny nightstands by adding these wall mounted lights beside his bed – the best part is that they swivel so he can get light where he needs it when he is reading before bed.

I love the mix of warm camel and brown leather tones with the black and white bedding against all of the green in the walls and pillows. The inspiration for camel tones came from this floor lamp that we’ve owned for several years. The wood tones in Leif’s new desk and bookcase also tie in the camel and brown tones.

The desk area

Originally I had planned to use a vintage style map above his desk, but I’m glad that we switched to this wood cut print. Not only does Leif love the look of it, but it carries the grey of the existing bed and curtains into the rest of the space. All of these art prints and frames/hanging frame were ordered from Photowall (same place as the mural is from).

My younger son is super jealous of his brother’s rolling desk chair. This one was such a great deal from Wayfair during Way Days in April.

The bookshelf

The warm wood and leather tones are carried over onto Leif’s new bookshelf as well. I couldn’t believe my luck in finding these adorable camel leather and light canvas storage baskets at a local big box store recently!

They’re so perfect with the rest of the decor in this space, and they hide away smaller items like collections, go-pro gear, golf stuff etc.

I’m going to share a separate post with my open bookshelf styling tips, because they are definitely a little trickier to style than typical closed in shelves.

Well, that’s a wrap!

My first One Room Challenge space in this house is all done. I love it, Leif loves it, and I’m starting to think about which room I tackle this fall. Plus I have ordered another wallpaper mural, so I hope I get to that project well before it’s time for the Fall ORC. Guess where it’s for?

Want to remember this? Just PIN it for later!

  1. Krista, oh my gosh! What a cool space you have created for Lief! That mural and the green paint in the room are beyond! Well done!

  2. When you asked us to vote on which of the two plans you were thinking of, this is the one I liked and I am so glad to see that it turned out even better than in the plan.
I am guessing that the other mural you are now ordering is for your youngest – hope I am right.
